FAQ: "Qualifed for D-I Nationals" vs. "Eligible for D-I Nationals"

"Qualified for D-I Nationals" vs. "Eligible for D-I Nationals"
The AAU Handbook states, "If a team in D-I qualifies for the National Championship, they cannot play in D-II or D-III. (Neither the team nor the athletes)."  

Qualified for D-I Nationals.  The AAU Girls' Basketball National Office has clarified that a team has "Qualified for D-I Nationals" only if has "placed" in its DQT or has an SRT bid; click here to see the applicable chart. 

Eligible for D-I Nationals.  The AAU Girls' Basketball National Office has clarified that additional teams in a district are eligible for D-I Nationals if they have not "Qualified for D-I Nationals" but finish high enough at the DQT to be offered a bid for D-I Nationals.  These teams are Eligible for D-I Nationals, but are not required to attend as they have not "Qualified for D-I Nationals.  These teams have the option of attending D-I or D-II Nationals. 

For purposes of determining bids to D-I and D-II Nationals in 2008, the following definitions are used:


Qualified for D-I Nationals
The total number of bids available to AAU D-I Nationals from the Potomac Valley District is the sum of:
     Number of bids based on number of teams "placing" in 2008 DQT in the PV District (D-I and D-II teams combined)
+   Teams with 2008 SRTs that did not qualify by "placing" at the DQT.
=   Number of Teams that are Qualified for D-I Nationals


Eligible for D-I Nationals
The total number of teams "eligible" to compete at AAU D-I Nationals from the Potomac Valley District is the sum of:
     Number of bids based on number of teams that "place" in 2008 DQT in the PV District (D-I and D-II teams combined
+   Additional slots for number of teams from PV that finished in Top 4 at the 2007 D-1 Nationals (in age group)
+   Number of bids earned at 2008 SRTs
=   Total number of "eligible for D-I Nationals" by age group
