FAQs re: Player Eligibility/Pick-Ups for Nationals

If A Player’s D-I Team Qualifies For D-I Nationals and Doesn’t Play in D-I Nationals, Can That Player Be Added to the Roster of A Team Attending D-II or D-III Nationals 
Answer: No

 

In the District Qualifying Championships section of the AAU Handbook on Pages 8-9, it states, "If a team in D-I qualifies for the National Championship, they cannot play in D-II or D-III.  (Neither the team nor the athletes.)"  

This point is repeated in the Competition Rules section of the AAU Handbook on Page 6 where it states, "No player whose team has qualified for a Division I Championship may be picked up for Divison II." 

Can A Player That Participated in a D-II DQT, Be Added to the Roster of a Team Attending D-I or D-II Nationals?
Answer: Yes
In the District Qualifying Championships section of the AAU Handbook on Page 9, it states, "Teams that qualify for D-I or D-II may pick up a player from D-II."   



How Many Players May Be Added to the Roster of a Team Attending D-I Nationals
Answer: Three
In the Competiton Rules section of the AAU Handbook on Page 6, it states, "A team shall be allowed to add (pick up) a maximum of three (3) players to their official roster when advancing to a National Schmpaionship with an overal maximum of fifteen (15) players."

In this same section of the Handbook, the following further requirement is added, "Pick-up players must qualify by age and residence in the year of competition."   



How Many Players May Be Added to the Roster of a Team Attending D-II or D-III Nationals
Answer: Five
In the Competiton Rules section of the AAU Handbook on Page 6, it states, "A team shall be allowed to add (pick up) a maximum of three (3) players to their official roster when advancing to a National Schmpaionship with an overal maximum of fifteen (15) players.  (D-II and D-III teams may pick up a maximum of 5 players)"  (Emphasis added.)

In this same section of the Handbook, the following further requirement is added, "Pick-up players must qualify by age and residence in the year of competition."   




Can A Player Participate In Both D-1 Nationals and D-II Nationals?
Answer: Yes, in Limited Circumstances
In the Player Participation portion of the Eligibility section of the AAU Handbook on Page 5, it states,

     "Individual players will be allowed to play in Division I AND II National Championships, only if their TEAM does NOT qualify for Division I. Players will be allowed to play in both the D-I National Championship (by being picked up by a Qualifying team) & the D-II National Championship (either by being picked up by another NON-D-I Qualifying team or with their original NON- Qualifying team)."
