Overview – Rules Limit What Players Can be Added to a Team After District Tournaments
The following is word-for-word* from the 2008 AAU Girls’ Basketball Handbook in the Competiton Rules, Roster Size section on Page 6:
Roster Size
-A miximum of fifteen (15) players is allowed on a team through the DQT, SRT and/or the National level. A team shall be allowed to add (pick up) a mixumum of three (3) players to their official roster when advancing to a National Championship with an overall maximum of fifteen (15) players. (D-II & D-III teams may pick up a maximum of 5 players).
An athlete may be granted a temporary transfer from her team/club to another team/club.
For the purpose of competing in an AAU National Championship, Pick-up players must qualify by age and residence in the team of competiton.
No player whose team has qualified for a Division I Championship may be picked up for Division II. As noted above, a player whose team has qualified fo a Division I National Championship many not be added to another qualifying team’s roter unless her original team does not enter the National Championship for which they qualified.
No team, afther their roster has been accepted for the District Qualifying Tournament, may drop any player to pick up another. Refer to Player Participation under Eligibility above.
A maximum of three (3) athletes from border Districts will be allowed on any team at District level and/or National level.
*Note: No changes to text have been made from the exact language on Page 6 of the 2008 Handbook. However, the formatting has been changed to make for easier reading and emphasis of certain points.
For related rules regarding the ability of players to be added to a teams roster for Nationals, see the Eligiblity rules on page 8 of the handbook by going to Player Eligibility Rules for DQTs, SRTs and Nationals.
Player Release Provisions
Page 4 of the 2008 Handbook includes a list of seven new rules for the 2008 season. Item #7 states:
"Roster Change: Once a team qualifies for a National Tournamant, the athletes on their roter cannont play for another team in a national Championship unless they are released (pending Natonal By-Law change) or her team declines teh bid and does not attend Nationals, she then may be picked up by a team that is attending from her district or an adjoining District."
Unclear how provison will be applied. It is unclear how this provision will be implemented, if it is implemented at all in 2008, as no specific rule in the Handbook makes reference to a "release" by a club or a team. Therefore, until any additional guidance is provided by this provision, a team or club should contact the Committee if it intends to use the release provisions in any way.
