April 2008
Meeting Minutes for April 9, 2008: Falls Church High School @ 7:30 PM; Minutes Approved at May 21, 2008 Meeting

Jody Patrick called the meeting to order at 7:32 P.M.

DQT Officiating – Presentation from CBOA and DQT Rules Issues
The first order of business was a brief presentation by Gary Chickoa of the Cardinal Basketball Officials Association (CBOA).  He stated that during the AAU Regional Tournament coaches needed to talk to parents in order to keep parents from being too unruly toward officials and opposing players.  Mr. Chickoa also suggested that if coaches have issues with the way a referee was calling a game, they should voice their displeasure in a calm manner.

The Regional Tournament will be played under NCAA modified rules.  During the first week there will be no 30 second shot clock with a 10 second back court.  Foul shooting will be on the release.  During the medal round games of the tournament there will be a 30 second shot clock and no 10 second backcourt rule.  The 5 second closely guarded rule will be for held balls only.  Foul shooting will be on the release.  Tournament rules will be posted on the PVAAU web site— www.pvaaugirlsbasketball.org.

T
hroughout the tournament if a player is wearing an illegal number, a technical foul will be assessed, but the player will be eligible to play.  The clock will stop after each made basket during the last minute of tournament games.

In response to a question from Cornell Barnes of the Beltway Lady Cougars, Ms. Patrick said that the CBOA officials are not required to referee all regional tournaments.  However, the officials for the regional tournaments must be from a recognized accredited referee organization.

Ms. Patrick thanked Mr. Chickoa for making his presentation to the group.

Approval of Minutes from March Meeting
At 7:56 PM Ms. Patrick said that the next order of business was to approve the minutes from the March 12, 2008 PVAAU meeting.  Joe Dunston of Team Sol made a motion to approve the March 12, 2008, meeting minutes and Andy Stadnik of the Classics seconded the motion.  The motion was passed unanimously.

Website Update
Ms. Patrick discussed how Jim Butler , of the Arlington Matrix, had done a remarkable job with the PVAAU web site and thanked him for all of his efforts to make the web site a success.  Mr. Butler said that he would be posting all the pools, schedules, scores and standings on the web site.  Mr. Butler asked tournament directors to coordinate with him to get the information up on the web site in a timely manner.

DQT - - Pool Draw
The major order of the meeting began at 8:05 PM, with the draft of teams for pools for the upcoming PVAAU Regional Qualifier Tournaments.

Andy Stadnik, of the Classics, made a motion to merge the 8 and 9-year old pools because only one 8-year-old team had registered.  Robert Surratt of Team Select seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Saladin Reese of Team Sol made a motion to propose combining both the Division 1 and Division II pools for the 10U qualifiers.  The motion was seconded by Mike Baker of the Maryland Flames.  However, a number of members were opposed to this move as setting a bad precedent with regard to mixing Divisions I and II.  The motion failed to pass with 2 members voting in favor and the rest of the members opposed.

The results of the 2008 draw, along with tournament contacts, are listed at the end of the minutes.

Meeting Adjourned
At 9:32 PM, upon completion of the draw for the 2008 Regional Qualifiers, Mike Baker of the Maryland Flames made a motion to adjourn the meeting.  Saladin Reese seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.  Ms. Patrick thanked all participants and declared the meeting adjourned.
