Potomac Valley Finishes 2008 Nationals with Six Trophies and Fourteen Top 16 Finishes

The Potomac Valley District sent 44 teams to age-based National Championships in 2008. Potomac Valley teams came home with six trophies and fourteen Top 16 finishes, highlighted by the 10-Under Division I championship trophy won by the Fairfax Stars.
In 2007, Potomac Valley teams earned three trophies and had fourteen teams in the Top 16. So all in all, it was another strong performance by Potomac Valley teams at Nationals. Click here to see the AAU Girls’ Basketball Results page.

10U D-I: Fairfax Stars are 10U National Champions; Win in Double OT

 Fairfax Stars 10U Gold Team with Gold Medals and the National Championship Trophy
The Fairfax Stars won the 10-Under Division I National Championship today with a 37-33 double overtime victory over the #1 seeded ISSA Lady Elite team from Indiana.
The Stars finished the tournament undefeated in both pool play and bracket play. Congratulations to the Stars’ players, Head Coach Bob McCormick and the rest of the coaching staff for bringing home the Potomac Valley’s first gold medal since 2006.
15U D-I: MD Flames Bring Home Silver Medal from Kings Island; Stars Finish Fifth

The Maryland Flames 15-Under team coached by Herb Krusen came up one game short of the national championship, but nevertheless will return home to Maryland with a silver medal from the 15-Under Division I National Championships held in Kings Island, Ohio over the last week.
The Flames dominated teams in pool play and throughout most of the bracket play as well. However, in the final, they fell 68-54 to the Memphis Elite. Congratulations to Coach Krusen and his Flames players for a job well done.
The Fairfax Stars also put on an impressive performance, running off six consecutive victories before falling in the quarterfinals to take home a fifth place finish. Congratulations to Coach Courtney Hall and her Fairfax Stars players.
14U D-II: YBAM Sparks Fall by One Point in Finals, Take Home Silver Medal; MD Lady Crusaders Finish Fourth

Championship bracket finals. The Potomac Valley District Division II champion YBAM Sparks fell 59-58 to the CT Starters in Saturday’s 14-Under Division II National Championship.
Congratulations to Coach Witmer and all the Sparks for winning the silver medal. The medal is the fifth medal earned by Potomac Valley teams in 2008.
Bronze medal game. In the bronze medal game, the MD Lady Crusaders lost to the CP Ballers 69-47. But despite the loss, the Lady Crusaders finished in fourth place at 14-Under Division II Nationals. Congratulations to Coach Bryant and all the Lady Crusader players.
9U: Vogues Win Bronze Medal

With two wins on Sunday, the Vogues captured the Bronze medal, the first Potomac Valley medal of the 2008 Nationals season. Congratulations to the Vogues.
In their third game of the day, vs. the Arkansas Mavericks, the Vogues trailed 38-19 at the end of the third quarter. The Vogues mounted a furious rally to close the gap to 40-31 with four minutes to go. In the end, the 19 point deficit was too much to overcome and the Vogues fell 45-38.

Open Division: GTS Aces Take Home Bronze Medal

The GTS Aces came home with a bronze medal from the Open Division National Championship on Saturday.
The defeated the Florida Ice 74-58 in the consolation game to clinch a medal. Congratulations to Coach Russell Loughner and the GTS Aces on their medal. Earlier in the day, the Aces fell in the semi-final to the CA Windsor Valiants.
The Potomac Fusion finished 5th in the tournament.
10U D-II: Classics and Matrix Both Eliminated

In near mirror performances, the Arlington Matrix and the Potomac Valley Classics were eliminated on Wednesday in the first day in the loser’s bracket.
The Classics fell 32-19 to the CT Roughriders and the Matrix dropped their game 32-18 to the Carolina Comets.
11U D-I: Flames Eliminated But Finish Top 5; PV Places Three Teams in Top 13

Congratulations to the Maryland Flames team coached by Mike Baker for finishing in the Top 5 at Branson, MO in the 11-Under D-1 Nationals. The Flames were eliminated today in a tough 45-39 loss to TN Team Pride.
The Potomac Valley District, with six teams in the tournament and five teams in the Championship Bracket had three teams finish in the Top 13: . Maryland Flames, Top 5 . Fairfax Stars, Top 9 . Team Sol, Top 13
All PV teams have now been eliminated from the tournament; the GBL Rebels defeated Indiana’s Finest 54-45 to win the championship.
11U D-II: Lady Ballers Finish Top 7; VA Hurricanes Finish Top 9

The MD United Lady Baller’s won their third game in the loser’s bracket at 9:00 AM with a 36-33 win over the Rockland Rockets; However, in the nightcap, they fell 48-43 to the the Surry StormSeivers. The Lady Ballers leave New Haven with a Top 7 finish.
Earlier in the day, the VA Hurricanes lost 43-37 to the same Surry StormSeivers to be eliminated from the tournament. Depspite the loss, the ’Canes take home a Top 9 finish.
All Potomac Valley teams have now been eliminated from the tournament; the NJB All-Stars, last year’s 10U D-I champions, defeated Surry StormSeivers 58-25 to win the championship.
12U D-I: Fairfax Stars Win Classic Championship

Classic Bracket. The Fairfax Stars claimed the 12-Under Division I Classic title today with a 63-55 victory over the Michigan Shock. The road to the Classic Championhip was a long one for the Stars. After losing their first game in the Classic Bracket, the Stars reeled off eigh straight wins to fight through the loser’s bracket to claim the championship.
Congratulations to Coach Mickey Frece and his Fairfax Stars team.
Championship Bracket. Only the Vogues made the Championship Bracket from the Potomac Valley and no PV teams placed in the Top 16.
The top dawgs in the 12U age group this year were from Georgia as the Georgia Ice and the defending champion Georgia Pistols Gold battled three times in two days. In the end, the Georgia Ice won the playback game 50-34 to claim the D-I title.
12U D-II: Vogues Eliminated in Second Game of Loser's Bracket

The Potomac Valley Vogues completed their tournament here in Bloomington with a loss to the White Rose Stars today (no score posted). The Vogues, coached by Dave McCrae, were the Potomac Valley AAU 12U D-II silver medalists.
13U D-I: Flames Go Home with Top 5 Finish! Stars Eliminated from Classic

Championship Bracket. After a great run here in Norman, OK in which they won five straight games to start the tourney, the Flames will be heading back to Maryland with a 5th place finish at the 13-Under Division I National Championship. The Flames dropped their game in the loser’s bracket on Thursday 64-31 to Dayton Lady Hoop Black.
This is the second consecutive year that this team has finished 5th at Nationals. Congratulations to Coach Alan Wang and the players on the Flames team.
Classic Bracket. After a long run through the loser’s bracket, the Fairfax Stars tournament ended on Thursday with a 57-42 loss to the GA Pistols Gold.
13U D-II: After 1-Point Loss, Classics Fall in Another Close Game to Finish 5th

Championship Bracket. The PV Classics lost a heartbreaker, 52-51, to the ISSA Lady Elite on Monday morning in Kingsport. Playing another very close game, the Classics came up just short their evening game, losing 54-49 to the TN Team Hustle.
Congratulations to the Potomac Valley Classics for their 5th Place finish.
14U D-I: Mustangs Fall in Quarterfinals of Classic Bracket

The WFBC Mustangs started the Classic Bracket strong on Friday with a 54-39 victory over the Tri-State Tarheels to advance to the quarterfinals. In Saturday’s quarterfinal game, the Mustangs lost a squeaker to the TN Glory 59-56. With the loss, the Mustangs were eliminated from the tournament.
15U D-II: After One Win, Team Sol Eliminated From Tournament

On the first day of the single elimination Championship Bracket, Team Sol started strong with a win over the St. Lady James Selct 63-61 win. Team Sol was then eliminated with a 64-33 loss to the Lady Falcons.
Jr. Eligible D-I: Cardinal Knocked Out of Championship Bracket in Close First Round Loss

In a tough 62-59 loss to MO Team Excel in the first round of the 16U Championship Bracket, the Cardinal were eliminated on Sunday.
In the Classic Bracket, the James Lee Lady Razorbacks won their first game over the Long Island Lightning before being eliminated from the tournament in the secod round 42-26 by CBC Next Level.
All Potomac Valley teams have completed action at the 16-Under D-I Nationals.
